Working with Clients: A Must in the Graphic Design Biz

Your clients are your bread and butter in the graphic design business. Therefore, make sure you treat them well.

When you talk to your prospective clients, make sure you speak to them in a pleasant voice and in an upbeat tone. Maintain a positive attitude, but do not take their inquiries for granted. Remember, potential consumers can in change their mind about you in a split second.

More importantly, always make sure you show your present clients how much you appreciate them. Your regular customers are the backbone of your business, and without them you would go under.

Therefore, make sure you complete all your projects on time. Furthermore, customers appreciate it when you give them regular updates.

Try not be neurotic-calling your clients five times a day, or e-mailing them every too minutes. However, they do appreciate a daily update, or at least every other day.

Along with that make sure you leave your client with plenty of contact information so they can get a hold of you. (You can do so in ways that will not jeopardize your security.)

If for some reason there is a delay beyond your control, make sure you alert your clients right away. Most of them are very understanding with freelancers as long as they know you are still working on the project. Try not to abuse that leniency, however. It can grow tiring to clients.

If you have an overload of work it would be wise for you to hire a copy editor. That person can inspect every design you create with great care. It will ensure that you will receive more work from that client again.

Speaking of checking over your designs, you will want to watch out for any color that does not belong in a certain area. Furthermore, there cannot be and smudges or flaws or any scratches of any kind.

This is particularly if you have scanned a photo or painting to use. If there is a flaw you should be able to fix it quite readily with today’s photo editing technology.

This leads to another very important aspect of keeping your customers satisfied. It is always important for you to use the most professional photo editing and object illustrating programs that you can find.

Try to avoid the cheap, limited editing programs unless it is meant to be an open source program for professionals. Gimp is one example of such used even by pros in recent years. However, the industry standard right now in the field of graphic arts is Photoshop.

If you are operating on a little bit lower budget or you are just starting out, you may consider a program such as Photoshop Elements. It gives you all but one percent of what Photoshop gives you at a fraction of the price.

You do have one other option, however. Ordinarily you cannot get away with using limited software editions to create your graphics. However, if you can prove that you can create professional-quality material with ordinarily useless editing programs that would actually be to your advantage.

You could offer the same services at a lower price to people, and they would still be satisfied with the work. If you are creative enough it is possible. However, you may want to reserve that for when you are independently wealthy and you have that kind of time on your hands.

Most professionals-even the most creative-generally use the professional standard for creating graphics and photos. Besides Photoshop, you also can implement Adobe Flash, or a variety of different Corel paint and draw products as well.

These programs help you arrange the graphics when you needed it done yesterday. This is not that you lose all your opportunity to be creative. Computer art design is actually just as enjoyable for most professional designers. The only difference is that it takes half as long.
