Tasers and Stun Guns – Viable Defense for Women?

While attacks on people do occur on men, women are the most vulnerable as they are usually not as strong. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule, but overall, women are weaker than men when it comes to being attacked. Enrollment for self defense classes for women is on the rise because crime against a person is on the rise. With that increased figure comes an increase in the sale of personal defense devices such as mace, tasers and stun guns.

Stun guns are battery operated devices which can be held in the palm of your hand and can be used to convey an electrical shock when used against someone attacking you. These electronic gadgets are not gun sin a conventional sense as you do not load bullets or anything else other than batteries on occasion. Instead, a stun gun employs two contacts made from metal that have to be held against your attacker as your hand depresses a button to deliver the electrical charge.

Tasers are also battery operated devices that deliver a charge to the attacker in the hopes of temporarily detaining them so that you can get away. However, with tasers, they launch two barbs made from metal over a distance. They work well over just a few yards but any further, they are not effective. The metal barbs are attached to the electronic device by wires and are supposed to become attached to an attacker when aimed at them.

The effect of both stun guns and tasers are controversial to a point as they do not always subdue an attacker. They work by delivering an electrical charge that is supposed to interrupt the regular function of the neuromuscular system, causing loss of control in the muscles as well as pain and extreme fatigue. Unfortunately, prolonged contact with the stun gun and taser is needed to effectively work, especially on larger attackers who can work through the pain of the electrical shock delivered by the metal barbs or prongs.

Because tasers and stun guns are not 100% effective in an attack, they are not normally recommended for women as a reliable form of self defense. In fact, many reports have shown that the attacker can easily take over the situation and get possession of the electronic devices and use them against the women who own them. In other words, the very devices that are made to protect the women against an attacker can be used against them. Therefore, if a female plans to carry a stun gun or taser anyway, they need to be well-versed in its operation as well as self defense moves so that the device is not appropriated by force and used against them.

Of course, stun guns and tasers may be a moot point for some women as they are restricted in its use and ownership in some states across the country. Therefore, if these devices are still be considered as a potential self defense tool, ladies need to research the laws regarding ownership and use of them in their state. Plus, if they travel across state lines or even fly, they must be well-versed in the laws in the places they visit as well.

All in all, both self defense instructors and law enforcement agree that stun guns and tasers may be of use as a back-up but women should not solely rely on them to make a significant impact in subduing an attacker. Many tests show that you would have to have prolonged continuous contact in order for the stunning effect to be effective which means staying up close and personal with the attacker. And if the attacker is one of those individuals that are not particularly affected by the shock produced by the stun gun or taser (think high on drugs), you are in a world of trouble. While they may be great tools to have, women should not place their life on the line by depending on them. Depend on yourself and become well versed in self-defense moves rather than tools.

Helpful Ideas for Choosing the Right Self-Defense Course

When it comes to self-defense, you should know that classes for it come in many forms. Perhaps you are trying to find you way to one in anticipation of future trouble. May be your victimized and choose not to become a victim again. Whatever your reason is for seeking a self-defense course, you must be thoroughly comfortable with its format or you will not get as much out of it as you should.

You will discover during your research for a self-defense course that it comes in a variety of forms. Your local police department or victims’ advocate office may sponsor classes through the local YMCA or parks and recreation department. Local martial arts studios may block off a night or two a week solely for teaching self-defense from a martial arts perspective. The curriculum may be all hands-on with demonstrations in between or there may be a defined written curriculum along with hands-on training. Go ahead and open up your telephone directory’s yellow pages and you will see quite a variety of options when it comes to self-defense classes. So how do you choose which class to take and in what format?

1. Decide what exactly you are looking for with your self-defense studies. Are you seeking moves solely for protecting yourself or do you aspire to compete professionally or want to keep in shape? There are a variety of self-defense classes and disciplines that focus on these different aspects. If you step into a martial arts studio that offers self-defense and you see a lot of trophies and awards, chances are the studio is involved in competition whereas a gym might focus on fitness as much as self-defense moves.

2. Checking for the right equipment. Part of self-defense is learning how to throw opponents off as well as how to fall down properly. You will want to check your potential self-defense place to ensure that the proper equipment is in place. This includes floor mats, body pads and other safety equipment. Be wary of a place that does not have this cushioned safety equipment because this means you are definitely not likely to receive an effective, full self-defense course.

3. Visit or take a tour of some self-defense places and observe a class in action. The best scenario is finding a class near your home or office for convenience. This means you are less likely to blow off the class. Viewing the facilities should give you an idea of how the place is run, the cleanliness of it, whether they have the proper equipment and more. Being able to observe a class would be optimal so you can see first hand how the instructors interact with the students as well as what you would be learning. As there are different skill levels, you will want to ensure that there are self-defense classes for every skill level.

4. Make an appointment to meet with the self-defense instructors. You can ensure that the facilities and equipment is adequate but if you cannot work well with the instructor, you will not get the most out of your self-defense class. You want an instructor that “speaks” your language. If you are more hands-on rather than audio, they would physically show you step by step the self-defense moves. However, if you are a visual or audio learner, they would tailor the teaching to that learning style. Choose an instructor that is tough but seems concerned about each of their students and how they are progressing. It is quite easy to weed out the bully instructors and those who think they are better than others.

5. When in doubt, ask for recommendations. Many people have taken self-defense or have even studied martial arts. Ask around for self-defense recommendations. Ask your local police department if they know of some reputable resources. The YMCA and local colleges may also offer self-defense courses taught by certified instructors. Look to all avenues for your self-defense needs.

First Self Defense Strategy for Women – Avoid Crime Altogether

Self defense strategies created specifically for women is a subject that entered the popular culture several years ago. Self defense classes began to spring up around recreation centers and schools around the country during the 1980s.

How to make self defense work for women

The problem with most of defense programs is that they’re not realistic and not based on the real ways that women are attacked every day. In order to be effective, a self-defense program for women must be based on knowledge of real attack. Women learn self-defense in order to protect themselves from very real threats of violence. The most common types of attacks against women include domestic violence and attacks and sexual assault. It has been noted in recent studies that women are about six times more likely than men to experience some kind of violence directed to them from someone they know. While strangers also attack women, most sexual attacks will not occur in a back alley or a deserted street in the middle of the night. It has been proven that an overwhelming number of assailants know the victims in most cases. Many violent sexual attacks take place in the workplace, in the home, at school, and other places that in most cases the women would feel comfortable.

What to look for in a self-defense program

If you are looking for a good self-defense program, what are some of the things they should be looking for? Aside from the obvious physicality of the program, you should pay close attention to how the program makes you feel. A good self defense program will help you develop a strong sense of self-worth and self-esteem. The more confident you feel, the more likely you are to survive an attack. An important part of any self defense program is that it makes you feel stronger and more prepared to take on all kinds of challenges. If your current self-defense program is not doing this for you right now, it may be time to move on and find a self-defense program to help to feel strong and confident.

More things to look for in a good self-defense program

Another very important aspect of a good self-defense program is that it is realistic and understands the way that a woman fights back. The best self-defense programs are those that understand the way the woman’s body works. Many self-defense training programs will focus on a woman’s natural defense skills. A good self-defense program will be flexible and will incorporate creative actions that women already used to defend themselves. Many martial arts self-defense programs fall short in this respect, playing too close to tradition and not allowing for creative improvising and movement. Choose a self-defense program that allows you to move naturally and exert your ideas into the program. A good self-defense program will also put you in touch with the support of community. Try to work with people you can trust and feel comfortable with. This is the only way that you could learn, by teaching yourself and being taught in a supportive and nurturing environment where you can learn your defense in order to truly study and learn.

What to avoid in a self defense program

What sort of things should you avoid in a self defense program? In general, avoid programs that seem to promote the idea that you should only fight back in defense of yourself. Your goal is to locate a program that trains you to remain engaged and active in the world, not one that teaches you a solely reactive method for fighting back.
